Headaches, Swelling, Changes in Vision, and Pain in Your Ribs

Preeclampsia is a serious condition that if it becomes severe, may lead to preterm delivery. Delivering the baby early is a primary treatment for preeclampsia¹. So your delivery could be unplanned or planned and still lead to a preterm birth. So, identifying the symptoms of preeclampsia¹ and telling your provider about them early is important.

How to Know if You Have This

The most common symptoms are:

  • Headaches that are severe and don’t go away with rest or medicine.

  • Significant swelling in your hands, arms, or face.

  • Blurred vision or spots in your vision.

  • Pain under your ribs on the right side of your body. This might be a sign that your liver is affected, a common symptom of preeclampsia.

When it's Urgent

  • It is important to talk to your provider if you experience any of these symptoms. Sometimes they may not be urgent or signs of preeclampsia. Better safe than sorry though because if not addressed, they can get worse and can become urgent.  So best to tell your provider early so they can help you to know when and what may be needed.
