Changes in your baby’s movements

Your baby’s movements are an important sign of their health. Paying attention to these movements can help you know if your baby is doing well. If your baby is moving less than usual or stops moving, it could sometimes mean they are not getting enough oxygen or nutrients. So, learning your baby’s movement patterns can help you understand if something is changing.

How to Know if You Have This

Everyone will feel their baby move for the first time at a different time in pregnancy. If this is not your first pregnancy, you might feel movement by 16 weeks. If this is your first pregnancy, it’s common to have to wait until week 20. Generally, you will feel some movement between weeks 20 through 24¹

At first, it may feel like flutters or bubbles. The baby is small, and the movements are not strong and will likely be irregular.

As you reach your third trimester (28 weeks), movements will feel stronger and more regular. You might start to notice patterns, like what time of day your baby is more active or when they are calmer. Remember, babies are not active all the time; they need their sleep too. Discovering what is normal for your baby can help you notice if things change. Kick counting is a way for you to track your baby’s movements and notice changes over time.

How to do Kick Counting

  • Choose a time when your baby is usually active (often after meals or in the evening).

  • Sit or lie on your left side.

  • Count every kick, roll, or jab until you reach 10 movements.

  • You should feel 10 movements within 2 hours (most babies do this in less time)².

  • Write down how long it takes each day so you can notice patterns and keep track of changes over time.

  • There are apps you can use that help you track these easily and also help you to keep a log. Your doctor or insurance company might have one available for you already.

When it's Urgent

  • If you notice that your baby is moving less than normal³.

  • If you’re at 28 weeks or more and you do not feel 10 movements in 2 hours during your baby’s active time².
